Miami Herald: Far-out debate

August 7th, 2012

By Michael Putney
mputney@justnews.com

I visited another planet the other night, and it was downright scary at times. Don’t worry, I’m talking about political planets here, especially ones in weird orbits. Those that veer to the far, far right.

The occasion was a debate I moderated between the five Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives in the newly drawn 23rd Congressional District, western and central Broward County, where Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (boo, hiss) is the incumbent. The debate was sponsored by the Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC).

The putative favorite, Karen Harrington, found an excuse to be absent. No problem, the other four filled the time with ease. But not always rationally. Sometimes their statements bordered on the ludicrous, boorish and unhinged. You know the ad for the cruise line that says “Get out there”? Some of these candidates are. Way out there.

Joe Kaufman, for example, basically advocated an immediate military attack on Iran by the United States and Israel. “The time for talk is over,” Kaufman said several times referring to efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions, “The time for action is now.” When candidate Gineen Bresso asked if Kaufman was saying let’s carpet bomb Iran and its nuclear facilities, Kaufman didn’t say yes, but implied it.

He also said that if voters in the 23rd C.D. want to elect a Jew who’s a better friend to Israel than Rep. Wasserman Schultz, then he’s the man. Along those same lines, candidate Ozzie De Faria observed that no one should vote for DWS simply because she’s Jewish and that he would be a stronger supporter of Israel than she is.

Lordy, how these folks detest Wasserman Schultz. The Weston congresswoman, a fierce Democratic partisan and hyperloyal Obama supporter, does have a knack for inflaming conservatives and irritating even some Democrats. But to listen to the GOP candidates running against her, DWS is the devil’s spawn. “Evil” was one frequent epithet heard at the debate. Absentee congresswoman was another, a charge that has more than a kernel of truth since DWS travels the country as chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Still, Wasserman Schultz is extremely popular in the redrawn 23rd district, which is deeply blue and heavily Jewish. Winning the right to run against her is a bit like running into a buzz saw. A skilled politician and debater, she chews up her opponents and spits them out. Two years ago when House GOP candidates staged a big comeback across the country, DWS beat her Republican opponent, Karen Harrington, by 22 percent. Harrington looks like the odds-on favorite to be the GOP nominee again this November.

Not according to candidate Juan Eliel Garcia, a businessman born in Puerto Rico, who says he’ll win the nomination because there are 105,000 Hispanic voters in the 23rd C.D. and they’ll automatically vote for him ’cause he’s Hispanic. Right.

Ozzie De Faria, who’s of Portuguese descent and hails from Massachusetts, says he’s the best candidate because of his extensive business experience. He also calls Dodd-Frank unnecessary legislation because financial markets are self-correcting. Right again.

Joe Kaufman’s recent experience includes running a group called “Americans Against Hate,” which ferrets out Islamist terrorists. Nothing wrong with that, but it has left him with a speaking style full of hyperbole and vitriol. He alleges that “stealth jihadists have the president’s ear.” He also accuses the Obama administration of waging a “war against free enterprise.” When I asked for an example he cited the Environmental Protection Agency, which he says is run by “environmental radicals” and described his own energy policy as “drill, dig and frack wherever we can.”

In this company, candidate Gineen Bresso came off as a moderate since she’d give sanctions more time to work against Iran, is concerned about beach renewal along the South Florida coast and says she’d create 25,000 jobs at Port Everglades by deepening the channel for the huge cargo ships that will start sailing through the widened Panama Canal in 2014. In other words, Bresso, a lawyer, seems to operate within the political mainstream. And on planet Earth.

Primaries play an essential role in the political process, but they often force candidates to veer to the far left or right to capture the party base. And to appeal to voters’ base instincts. The debate I moderated — held in Hollywood before a crowd of GOP faithful — left me feeling like I had visited an outlier neighborhood in a town I thought I knew. When I suggested to candidate Kaufman, after one particularly virulent anti-Obama and anti-DWS tirade, that moderate voters would see such comments as “far out,” he laughed at me. And candidate De Faria said he knew where I was coming from since he’d visited my Facebook page and found that I “liked” Debbie Wasserman Schultz. What a surprise since I’ve never “liked” any political candidates and am registered NPA.

“Nothing personal,” Ozzie told me as he left. Of course not. It never is.

South Florida Tea Party Endorses Gineen Bresso for Congress (FL-23)

August 7th, 2012

For Immediate Release
August 7, 2012

The South Florida Tea Party has endorsed Gineen Bresso for Congress. The following is a statement from the South Florida Tea Party concerning this endorsement.

“There is little doubt that Gineen Bresso is the most qualified candidate among a wide field of entries. Her CV screams lifelong Republican having been nationally recognized as a “Young Republican” and worked under various Republican administrations in every branch of government in both state and federal governments serving as a Senior Policy Advisor for Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich, as Chief Counsel and Director of Legislative Affairs for the House Administration Committee, and most recently as President George W. Bush’s Commissioner to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC). In her role as commissioner, she earned recognition as a fiscal hawk by slashing expensive junkets and reigning in expanding budgets going so far as to become a “whistleblower” by denouncing her own agency and testifying before Congress “spilling the beans” on a budget that went mostly to pay for administrative, bureaucratic overhead, rather than the EAC’s actual mission – helping make our elections better.

We should all demand that our congressional candidates have such a conservative pedigree like Bresso has prior to running for office.”

The Republican primary election to choose a nominee for Congress is on Tuesday, August 14th.

June 11th, 2012

On Monday, June 11, 2012, Gineen Bresso, Republican candidate for U.S. Congress released the following statement:

“As of Friday, June 8, I have submitted the required documentation and have officially filed my candidacy for the Republican nomination for U.S. Congress against Debbie Wasserman-Schultz in CD-23. I want to thank each and every one of you for your help and support the last few months.  The outpouring of support that I have received from people in the district is a testament to the viability of the solutions I propose to reduce unemployment, cut the deficit and create economic growth right here in south Florida. But there is much work to be done.

“Travelling around Broward and Miami-Dade County, from Weston and Southwest Ranches, to Hollywood and Miami Beach, I have had the privilege of hearing from so many of you who are frustrated, as I am, with a broken system of government in Washington, D.C. By working together, I am committed to being a true, full-time Representative of the people of CD-23 and with your help and support, we can usher in a new era of fresh, fiscally responsible leadership.”

Strengthening our Armed Forces, Securing Our Borders, Protecting America

June 10th, 2012

Sunday, June 10, 2012

This week, we marked two important occasions in our nation’s history. On Tuesday, June 4, we commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, where the U.S. Navy took out much of the Japanese Imperial Fleet, and the four Japanese aircraft carriers that were responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor. This historic display of American naval might set the course for the remainder of our Pacific advance and helped bring about the beginning of the end of World War II. Then, on Wednesday, June 6, we commemorated the 68th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, the largest amphibious landing in world history.

These events were not just important events in our nation’s history, they were also a significant part of daily life and affected every American and their families, including my own, for generations to come. My grandfather and CD-23 resident, Frank Flori, served in the U.S. Navy and fought in Okinawa at the end of World War II. We owe a great deal of respect and appreciation to our Armed Forces and military families. Their courage and bravery have protected America and our allies for decades. But they are currently in jeopardy.

President Obama and Congressional Democrats like Debbie Wasserman Schultz, support cuts to our Armed Forces, particularly the U.S. Navy and National Guard, that undermines our national security, weakens our border security and threatens America’s sovereignty. Even President Obama’s own Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta called the Democrats’ proposed cuts to our military “devastating.” At a time when America faces new, emerging threats of terrorism, drug trafficking and a rising China, we need to ensure that our National Guard and U.S. Navy have more resources at their disposal, not less. Furthermore, this Administration’s push for U.S. ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty is a gross submission of U.S. sovereignty to the United Nations, constrains the U.S. Navy, and threatens the free flow of maritime commerce and goods throughout the world.

Rest assured, I am committed to:

- Ensuring that disastrous cuts to our military, such as the impending sequester and President Obama’s “devastating” proposals, are avoided;

- Strengthening our Armed Forces, particularly the Navy and National Guard, as well as enhancing our and Border Patrol efforts.

- Protecting America’s sovereignty and access to the sea.

Upholding these values are crucial to delivering a robust American foreign policy for the 21st Century, and if elected, I will do what is necessary to strengthen our armed forces, secure our borders, and protect America.

Gineen Bresso Statement on Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Attack on Governor Jeb Bush

June 2nd, 2012

Gineen Bresso, candidate for Congress in Florida’s 23rd District, released the following statement on Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s attack on Governor Jeb Bush.

“I am shocked, yet not that surprised, that on the same day that the Labor Department reported that unemployment in the U.S. rose to 8.2%, Florida Congresswoman and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz would launch a hollow attack on former Florida Governor Jeb Bush for his successful initiative in recruiting Scripps Research Institute to Florida. Her attack on one of Florida’s most accomplished Governors, for recruiting new businesses and bringing high-tech industry and jobs to south Florida, illustrates just how out of touch Wasserman-Schultz truly is when it comes to the issues facing Floridians. Rather than attacking a prominent former Governor, her constituents would probably be better served if she utilized her position as a Congresswoman to help create jobs and economic growth.”

Gineen Bresso Memorial Day Message

May 29th, 2012

Dear Friend,

Over the weekend, our nation commemorated Memorial Day to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives fighting for this great nation. On this humble occasion, we give thanks for their ultimate sacrifice and pray for their families and loved ones.

Gineen Bresso thanks Veterans in Davie

Joining Floridian’s in Davie and Boca Raton, I paused to reflect and remember those before us who gave their lives in the name and honor of the United States of America, and to protect our liberties. I also prayed for the safe return of those that serve and protect us today. It is because of their sacrifice that we live in a free society. Answering the call to duty, bravely and selflessly, to protect America and our allies, the men and women of our Armed Forces stand up to tyranny and oppression wherever it may be, and for that we are forever grateful.

Gineen Bresso with Carl Muscarello (aka the "Kissing Sailor") and fellow Italian-American Veterans of the Broward 10-13 Club in Boca Raton

We must always remember the cost of freedom and honor our veterans and their families, on Memorial Day and everyday. My family and I thank our servicemen and women for keeping us safe, for protecting our values and way of life, and for making the world a better place.

Warm regards,

Gineen Bresso

Gineen Bresso Statement on Exposure of General Services Administration’s (GSA) Wasteful Spending & Federal Budget Priorities

April 24th, 2012

Date: April 24, 2012
Contact: Taniel Koushakjian
Email: Taniel@gineenbresso.com
Telephone: (202) 903-5362

Fort Lauderdale, FL – Today, Gineen Bresso, former commissioner of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and current candidate for Congress in Florida’s new 23rd District, released the following statement:

“After a week of Congressional hearings surrounding the GSA scandal and the still unfolding depth to which government employees at senior levels were involved in wasting massive amounts of tax-payer dollars, the government and this administration in particular is taking the country down a dangerous path. A $15 Trillion dollar debt, the President’s proposed $1.1 Trillion dollar annual budget, and the business-as-usual federal bureaucracy underscore the need to restore fiscal responsibility in Washington.

“As a former EAC commissioner, I testified last year before Congress against my agency’s own budget given the same type of wasteful spending that seems all too prevalent in today’s government infrastructure. It may not have been politically popular, but in a time when average people are barely able to keep their head above water, it is incumbent upon our elected officials to lead by example and watch out for the American people. The revelations at the GSA are an embarrassment for Democratic leaders and the case of EAC is another of dysfunction. For instance, in 2008 an audit found that the EAC failed to meet 20 out of 29 internal controls for acceptable financial and management operation. Also, an independent audit found that the EAC spent approximately $7,000 on 458 sweatshirts and polo shirts for 39 employees, leading the EAC’s Inspector General to determine this was a misuse of federal funds.

“The American people deserve a leader who is not only responsible, but knows when to act, and the people of Florida’s new 23rd district need a full-time Representative who can bring fiscal restraint and responsibility to Washington. If elected, I intend to be that Representative and to continue to fight for the taxpayer.”
