Fort Lauderdale, FL – Today, Gineen Bresso, former commissioner of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and current candidate for Congress in Florida’s new 23rd District, released the following statement:
“After a week of Congressional hearings surrounding the GSA scandal and the still unfolding depth to which government employees at senior levels were involved in wasting massive amounts of tax-payer dollars, the government and this administration in particular is taking the country down a dangerous path. A $15 Trillion dollar debt, the President’s proposed $1.1 Trillion dollar annual budget, and the business-as-usual federal bureaucracy underscore the need to restore fiscal responsibility in Washington.
“As a former EAC commissioner, I testified last year before Congress against my agency’s own budget given the same type of wasteful spending that seems all too prevalent in today’s government infrastructure. It may not have been politically popular, but in a time when average people are barely able to keep their head above water, it is incumbent upon our elected officials to lead by example and watch out for the American people. The revelations at the GSA are an embarrassment for Democratic leaders and the case of EAC is another of dysfunction. For instance, in 2008 an audit found that the EAC failed to meet 20 out of 29 internal controls for acceptable financial and management operation. Also, an independent audit found that the EAC spent approximately $7,000 on 458 sweatshirts and polo shirts for 39 employees, leading the EAC’s Inspector General to determine this was a misuse of federal funds.
“The American people deserve a leader who is not only responsible, but knows when to act, and the people of Florida’s new 23rd district need a full-time Representative who can bring fiscal restraint and responsibility to Washington. If elected, I intend to be that Representative and to continue to fight for the taxpayer.”
